What is an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a standard-format translation of the driving licence you already hold. It puts your name, your photo and the vehicle categories you are licensed for into multiple languages, so that police officers and rental staff abroad can read your credentials without having to decipher a document in a language and alphabet they do not use.
What an International Driving Permit actually is
Think of an IDP as a passport-sized companion booklet for the licence in your wallet. It does not contain any new driving entitlement of its own. Everything printed inside it is copied from the national licence you already passed a test for — your full name, date and place of birth, the authority that issued your licence, its number, and the categories of vehicle you are allowed to drive. The one thing an IDP adds is language: the same information is repeated in several widely-used languages and in a page layout that is broadly consistent from country to country.
That consistency is the entire point. A traffic officer in a country whose road signs, alphabet and licence format you have never seen before is in exactly the same position you are: they are looking at an unfamiliar card. An IDP gives both of you a shared reference page. It is the reason rental desks in popular destinations so often ask for one before handing over keys, even in places where local law does not strictly require it — the document makes their check fast and unambiguous, and it protects them if something goes wrong later.
The format itself is not new. The idea of a standard, multi-language translation of a driving licence for cross-border travel dates back to international road-traffic agreements of the twentieth century, and the layout most travellers recognise — grey booklet, photo on the inside, a repeating grid of vehicle categories — comes from that lineage. Individual countries decide for themselves how they treat the document, which is why the honest answer to “is my IDP valid in country X?” is always “check country X” rather than a blanket yes.
What an IDP is not
This is where most of the confusion — and most of the money wasted online — comes from. An IDP is a supporting document. Being clear about its limits is more useful to you than any marketing claim we could make about it.
It is not a driving licence
An IDP grants no driving privileges by itself. If your national licence is expired, suspended or revoked, an IDP does not restore anything — it becomes a translation of a document that is no longer valid.
It is not a replacement for your own licence
You must carry both. An IDP presented on its own, without the licence it translates, is of no use at a roadside check or a rental counter.
It is not a licence to drive categories you never passed
The vehicle categories on an IDP are copied from your national licence. If you are not licensed for motorcycles at home, an IDP will not add that entitlement.
It is not a guarantee of acceptance
Acceptance is always at the discretion of local authorities, police and vehicle rental companies. Requirements differ by country, and some countries impose extra conditions such as a minimum age, a minimum licence-holding period, or a notarised translation instead.

What is inside the document
Every entry is a direct restatement of your existing licence. There is no additional test, interview or driving assessment involved, because there is nothing new being granted.
- Your full name, date of birth and place of birth, as they appear on your licence

- The country and authority that issued your national licence, and its number
- The categories of vehicle you are licensed to drive (for example A for motorcycles, B for cars)

The same information can travel with you in three different shapes. Most people end up wanting more than one: the booklet for a formal check, the card for daily carrying, the digital copy for the moment the other two are back at the hotel.

Who needs an IDP
The short version: if you intend to drive in a country whose official language is not the language your licence is printed in, an IDP is worth having. More specifically, travellers usually run into one of these situations.
You are renting a car abroad
This is the most common reason by far. Rental companies set their own documentation policies on top of local law, and many will not release a vehicle to a driver holding a licence they cannot read — or will only do so after a delay while they call a manager. Some list the requirement clearly at booking; others mention it only in the terms you agreed to when you paid.
You may be stopped at a roadside check
A routine stop becomes much shorter when the officer can read what you have handed them. In countries where an IDP is expected, not carrying one can turn a two-minute check into a fine or a longer conversation at a station.
You are driving across several countries in one trip
Road trips that cross borders multiply the number of different rule sets you are subject to. Carrying one document that works the same way at each crossing is simpler than researching each country’s translation requirements separately.
You are unsure whether you need one
If your trip involves driving at all, the cost of carrying an IDP you did not strictly need is far smaller than the cost of standing at a rental counter without one. That said, if you are not planning to drive, you do not need an IDP — it has no use as identification or as a travel document.
How an IDP works with your own driving licence
The two documents are a pair, and the relationship only runs one way: your national licence is the thing that gives you permission to drive, and the IDP describes that permission in other languages. Hand over both together, every time. An IDP on its own proves nothing, because there is nothing behind it to verify.
It follows that the IDP inherits every limit your licence has. If your licence is provisional, restricted to automatic transmission, or endorsed with conditions such as corrective lenses, those limits still apply abroad. If your licence expires while you are travelling, your IDP effectively expires with it, regardless of the dates printed inside. And if your licence is suspended after the IDP was issued, the IDP does not survive the suspension.
One practical consequence: keep your licence details current. If you renew your licence, change your name, or gain a new vehicle category after your IDP was issued, the translation no longer matches the original — which is exactly the mismatch an official is looking for.
How long an IDP lasts
We issue permits with a validity of one, two or three years from the date of issue, and you choose the period when you apply. Two rules override whatever period you pick:
- The IDP is only useful for as long as the underlying national licence stays valid. Its own expiry date is a ceiling, not a promise.
- Some countries only accept an IDP for a limited stay — a few months, or up to the point where you are considered resident and expected to obtain a local licence instead. Long stays need checking separately.
For a single two-week holiday the shortest option is usually enough. Longer periods make sense if you travel regularly and would rather not repeat the application each year. Compare the validity options and prices.
How to get an IDP
There is no exam and no driving test, because nothing new is being granted — the process is a document check and a translation. What you need to have ready:

A valid national driving licence
It must still be in date, and it must be yours. Have clear photographs of the front and back.

Plain background, face clearly visible, no sunglasses or hats. This is the photo that will appear on the permit.

Your personal and address details
Name, date and place of birth, and residential address — entered exactly as they appear on your licence, so the two documents match.

A validity period and format
One, two or three years, and whether you want the digital copy, the physical booklet and card, or both.

In many countries an authorised automobile association or a government office also issues a permit, sometimes over the counter, and it is worth knowing that option exists before you choose. Before you travel
Five minutes of checking beats an argument at an airport rental desk. Before you fly:
- Check your destination country's own requirements for foreign drivers, and any minimum age or licence-holding period it applies.
- Read your rental company's documentation policy — it can be stricter than the law.
- Confirm your national licence will not expire during the trip.
- Pack the licence and the permit together, and keep a digital copy of both somewhere you can reach without your wallet.
- Check whether your travel or car insurance sets its own conditions on driving abroad.
